VERMONT HOUSE DEMOCRATS TO ADDRESS PUBLIC SAFETY AT PRESS CONFERENCE
Montpelier, VT – On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, the Vermont House Democrats will host a press conference to discuss rising public safety concerns statewide. The event will take place at 9:15 AM in the Cedar Creek Room at the Vermont Statehouse.
Vermonters have increasingly expressed concerns about safety, and data confirms that many crime rates have risen in recent years. To address these issues, the legislature has focused on tackling both the root causes of crime—such as substance use disorder, mental health challenges, and poverty—and improving Vermont's criminal justice system.
In 2024, lawmakers passed key reforms, including Acts 128, 129, 125, and 120, to address retail theft, auto theft, drug trafficking, and ghost guns. Systemic changes, like a new pretrial supervision program and expanded restorative justice practices, were also enacted to improve accountability and efficiency in the justice system.
This session, House Democrats will continue collaborating with the administration to address public safety gaps, improve juvenile justice, and ensure that the criminal justice system delivers swift, certain, and fair consequences. By increasing resources for courts, prosecutors, and defenders, and expanding diversion programs, Vermont aims to reduce delays and enhance deterrence.
