You are invited to Vermont Bees, Their Threats, and What We Can Do, an online seminar with guest speaker Dr. Samantha Alger of the Vermont Bee Lab at the University of Vermont. Dr. Alger will talk about the diversity of Vermont's bees, their importance, and their major threats with a focus on pesticides. Vermont bees and other pollinators such as moths, butterflies, beetles, and flies play a vital role in one out of every three bites of food humans eat. Research shows that bee populations are declining rapidly. Pesticides are contributing to this decline and putting our food supplies and general environmental health at risk. Dr. Alger's ongoing research in part is providing ways to act on this problem in Vermont.

Dr. Samantha Alger, PhD, is a research assistant professor at the University of Vermont where she works to improve the health of both managed and wild pollinators through research, education, and outreach. She conducts research on bee disease, teaches beekeeping courses, and directs the Vermont Bee Lab. She provided expert testimony to the Vermont Legislature on Bill H.706, the Pollinator Protection Bill, which passed into law in June 2024. This ground-breaking bill will phase out the use of neonicotinoid pesticides on certain plants and agricultural seeds in Vermont.
