Watch: VT-Made Documentary on Noise and Its Impacts

A new award-winning documentary—made right here in Vermont—looks at noise pollution and its impacts on health and well-being. THE QUIETEST YEAR will air on Vermont Public on February 6th at 8 PM. Check it out!

I was lucky enough to watch the documentary at a public screening and was blown away by it. Extremely informative, entertaining and, at times, heartbreaking. Vermonters tell their personal stories about the effects that noise has had on their lives. The sources of noise explored in the film include loud motor vehicles, airplanes, recreational shooting, and more.

The impacts from exposure to excessive noise are real and preventable. In the film, experts discuss how noise can cause heart disease, hearing loss, cognitive impairment in children, sleep loss, and mental health problems.

Unfortunately, as our population grows, so does the level of noise. (I can remember a much quieter Vermont). But our public policies have not kept up with the times.

The film makers hope to raise awareness and start a discussion about the problems of noise pollution, and how we can more effectively deal with the issues on a policy level. The work on this has just begun (you can help).

Watch (or record) THE QUIETEST YEAR on February 6th on Vermont Public.
