Unpacking Act 139: Vermont's New Literacy Law
The Hayes Room, Kellogg-Hubbard Library
January 21st 4:00 - 5:00 pm

Dorinne Dorfman, Ed. D., Ed.S. Education Specialist in Reading and Literacy Instruction and Shelby Lindley, M.Ed with 21 years in education, including special education and literacy intervention. In this workshop, you will learn how scientific research over the last four decades has shown nearly every student can be taught to read with effective instruction in the five components of reading. Starting with the brain, then describing teaching methods in the foundations of English that both educate every student as well as target literacy gaps. With the passage of the new VT literacy law, Act 139, Dr. Dorfman and M. Lindley share what teachers and parents can expect for changes in school protocols, and recommend best practices that can fulfill the law's intent: to teach all of Vermont's students to read. The workshop includes time for questions to deepen participants' knowledge of how students learn to read as well as understand the potential impact of Act 139, VT's new literacy law.

Regularly scheduled after school programming will take place during the presentation in the Children's Library on the second floor.
