Brattleboro Concert Choir: An Hour to Dance

Past event
Jan 18, 2025, 7 to 8:30 PM

"An Hour to Dance" is the Brattleboro Concert Choir's invitation to be moved by music made for dance.

Directed by Jonathan Harvey, the choir's performances will feature dance-focused Choral works by Gwyneth Walker, Johannes Brahms, Sydney Guillaume, and Charles Stanford

Two concerts are scheduled, the first Saturday, January 18, at 7 p.m. at the Latchis Theatre, Brattleboro; the second is Sunday, January 19, at 4 p.m., also at the Latchis.

"Our 'An Hour to Dance' program is an exploration and celebration of the relationship between music and movement," says Harvey. "Across centuries and continents, we're performing pieces that celebrate dance, from the rustic to the refined. Two of the featured works, by Johannes Brahms and Charles Stanford, are deeply Romantic – they look back on an imagined, uncomplicated past."

He continues: "Sydney Guillaume's work 'Kalinda' is a joyous and propulsive ode to dance and drums, in Haitian Creole, while Gwyneth Walker's beautiful and complex 'An Hour To Dance' traces the life of poet Virginia Hamilton Adair from childhood to old age, with a beautiful mixture of naivete, nostalgia, regret, and hopefulness."
