The Champlain Islands UUSD School Board has a special meeting Tuesday, Jan 7, at 6:00 PM to consider options for reconfiguration of the North Hero and Grand Isle schools. The meeting is at the Grand Isle School Library, with remote access available.

This is a followup to the public input process undertaken in August-October. We invite additional community input at this meeting.

Preliminary budget figures indicate that, without changes, next year's budget will exceed the "excess spending threshold" and thus trigger tax penalties. Although there is a large amount of discussion at the state level about education funding reforms, no actual proposals have been brought forward. However, school districts are required to set their budgets within the next few weeks. We have to assume that the current funding mechanism will continue for at least the next year.

The budget for the 2025-2026 school year will be adopted at the next (Jan 14) meeting and will depend on the actions taken (if any) to reconfigure the two campuses. Options under consideration include:
- No change
- Move all (or most) grade levels to Grand Isle School and move SU offices to North Hero
- Reconfigure grade offerings with some levels at North Hero and others at Grand Isle campuses
- Change attendance boundaries to assign students to specific schools based on town of residence
- Start process to close and give up North Hero campus

Additional changes may be considered in the future, but other options require more than one year and/or coordination with other willing school districts.

The Board welcomes public comments in writing, in emails or verbally at board meetings during the "Citizens and/or Staff to be Heard" portion of the agenda during this meeting. Residents and/or staff who sign up on the speaker list will have up to two (2) minutes for comments, which may be prepared in advance. Please identify yourself by name and your topic area and direct your comments to the Board. This is your opportunity to share your comments directly with the Board.
