💰 The Silver Heist 5K and Little Bandits Bolt – Race Through History, Dash for Silver! 🏃✨
Are you ready to combine fitness, fun, and a touch of local legend? Join us for the Silver Heist 5K and Little Bandits Bolt on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in Orwell, Vermont. This race isn't just about crossing the finish line—it's about stepping into the story of two legendary bank robberies that shook Orwell during the horse-and-buggy era.
🎩 The Tale of the Silver Heist
In 1862, bandits stole $30 in silver from the Orwell Bank, and nearly 40 years later, thieves struck again, taking money and Mrs. Myrtie P. Brooks' ring. The stolen ring was left behind at the bandits' camp after their hurried escape.
Runners will start with a wooden token inspired by the ring, launched by the blast of a conch shell—a tribute to Eber Murray, one of Orwell's first settlers. In the late 1700s, Eber was the only person in town with a clock and used his conch shell to signal time for evening prayers. Midway, runners will leave their ring at the bandits' camp, then race down scenic North Orwell Road to finish on the town green, cheered on by the community. The winner will receive $30 in silver—the same amount stolen in the first heist!
