On Christmas Eve at 5:00 p.m., First Presbyterian Church of Barre will celebrate the season with a candlelight service based on the "Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols." The service originated at the University of Cambridge, King's College Chapel, in 1918 as a response to the ravages of World War 1. It continues to speak profoundly of the Christmas message, in its simplicity and accessibility.
First Presbyterian's service includes all of the original lessons, the opening introit "Once in Royal David's City," and the beginning Bidding Prayer. The Bidding Prayer included prayers for the fallen of the Great War and the needs of many in post-war Britain. This prayer continues to have relevance in our own war-torn and needy world. The "Festival" has been adapted by the PCUSA Mission Agency and includes the carols with which Americans are more familiar. The service features Daniel Gaviria on guitar and Dan Krymkowski on organ.
Services are offered in the sanctuary at 19 Seminary St., Barre and online at fpcbarre.org. All are welcome to join us in this joyful, traditional celebration of the Christmas season. Come hear the "...old, old stories" and join in singing the ancient carols as we usher in the birth of Christ.
