Have you been thinking about how to approach smartphone and social media use with your kids? Maybe you're considering when the time will be right to get them a phone or how to enforce boundaries with the one they already have. Wondering what other parents are doing and thinking about this topic in our community? Let's get together and talk about it!
We are a couple of UCS parents who want to help get the conversation going. Please join us for a four part Discussion Series on a book that digs deep into this subject: The Anxious Generation, How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt. (Heavy title, but it really does offer some real, actionable solutions!)
The series is presented in partnership with ReConnect, a growing group of families from the MMUUSD working to build community around the impacts of smartphones and social media on our kids.
Meetings will be held in the Deborah Rawson Memorial Library Fireplace Room on the third Tuesday of each month starting in January from 6:30-8:00pm. Each month we'll focus on a section or two of the book:
January 21st: Parts 1 and 2 (A Tidal Wave and The Backstory: The Decline of a Play Based Childhood)
February 18th: Part 3 (The Great Re-Wiring: The Rise of the Phone-Based Childhood)
March 18th: Part 4 (Collective Action for Healthier Childhood)
April 15th: (Recap and Looking Ahead: What's next for our community?)
Please join us for any or all of the gatherings regardless of how much you've read or listened to. Don't have time to read the whole book, but would like an overview? Here's an interview with the author you can listen to: https://www.goodinside.com/podcast/7065/the-anxious-generation-with-jonathan-haidt/ We welcome everyone to come and share their perspectives and experiences. We look forward to coming together as a community and hope you will join the conversation!
