It is one of the longest-running community science programs in the nation. Each year citizens throughout North America and beyond participate in the Christmas Bird Count that takes place between December 14th and January 5th. Count areas are circles 15-miles in diameter and participants try to tally all individual birds in the area on count day. It is a great time to get together with other bird enthusiasts or watch your feeder from your own home. Field observers spend most of the day patrolling designated areas while feeder watchers keep track of birds at their own homes for as much or as little time as they can provide. Assistance in both categories is welcome.
Middlebury's count is scheduled for December 17th. Jim and Kris Andrews – jandrews@vtherpatlas.org are our area's local contacts. Email them to find out more about how to participate. (Sponsor Organization: Otter Creek Audubon Society)
