Anne Haynie Collins, author of the new book Vintage Pies: Classic American Pies for Todays Home Baker, will serve up an oral and gustatory tour of pies dating back to the 17th century on Saturday, December 13, at 10 a.m. at the Cornwall Congregational Church.
The program will feature tastings from the books recipes. Copies of the book will be on sale, as will full pies to take away, baked by members and friends of the Cornwall Church.
Admission and tastings are free thanks in part to the underwriting of Otter Creek Kitchenware and Electronics. All proceeds from the sale of books and pies will go to the Warming Shelter at the Charter House in Middlebury.
Anne is a trained engineer who has been a passionate baker and recipe collector since childhood. She regards pies as folk-art heirlooms that help tell the stories of our past. They've graced American tables since the days of the Pilgrims, with variations evolving into regional favorites all around the country.
From Lemon Chess Pie to Quakertown Pie, from Mock Apple Pie to Squash Pie to Bob Andy Pie, a tale lies behind every one. (Bob Andy Pie is said to owe its name to the Amish farmer who, after savoring a bite, declared it to be as good as Bob and Andy, his two prize plowhorses.) Vintage Pies ($21.95) is a thoroughly local production, published by The Countryman Press of Woodstock and featuring photos by Todd and Lisa Balfour of Shoreham. All ingredients in the pies to be served on December 13 will come from local farms, gardens, orchards and markets.
