The Brandon Museum and Brandon Recreation Department will host the film, Lost Nation, at Brandon Town Hall at 2pm on 12/15/24. Vermont film maker, Jay Craven, will join the event to introduce his film and provided a question and answer session after the show. This is a free event with a 200-seat maximum.
The film tells of two historical figures, Vermont founding father, Ethan Allen and poet, Lucy Terry Prince. Ethan and Lucy lived in Vermont during the Green Mountain Boys' fight for Vermont sovereignty and independence. Lucy's history is less known. Her poem, "Bars Fight," about the 1746 assault on two families is believed to be the oldest known piece of literature by an African American. Prince and Allen fight for independence in different ways. Allen, by covert military operations, and Prince by seeking aid from Governor Chittenden against racial tyranny. Both experience the challenges of defending their land. Allen is a celebrated Vermont hero, but like many historians, the film depicts a side that was complex and controversial during those times. Lost Nation was shot on Nantucket Island and in Marlboro, VT.
The Brandon Museum offers educational events that connect our community with its history. Many thanks to Mr. Craven for offering this as a free event and to Phoenix Feeds, National Bank of Middlebury, and Hannaford Market for funding the screening fee.
