The Norwich University Corps of Cadets, under the command of Cadet Colonel Sophia M. Righthouse '25, will conduct a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday, December 7 at 10:00 p.m. at the Upper Parade Ground. This remembrance will honor the terrible loss of precious lives and those injured when Pearl Harbor was surprise attacked by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. Regimental Buglers will perform echo Taps while the Corps of Cadets renders a hand salute, followed by Amazing Grace, played by the Norwich University Pipes and Drum.
Members of Norwich and nearby communities are welcome to attend and may gather in front of Jackman Hall. Though brief, the ceremony is quite solemn. We ask attendees to arrive at the Upper Parade Ground by 9:55 pm and respect the solemness of the remembrance.
The U.S. flag will be flown at half-staff on December 7 throughout the day. Members of the MCV Class '25 will conduct a 24-hour vigil adjacent to the flagpole on the Upper Parade Ground starting at 12:00 a.m. on Saturday.
For information, contact the Office of the Commandant at 485.2135 / commandant@norwich.edu.
Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii, that was the scene of a devastating surprise attack by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. Just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the base, where they managed to destroy or damage nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships and over 300 airplanes. More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, and another 1,000 people were wounded. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. Excerpt from: https://www.history.com/topics/world-war-ii/pearl-harbor
