Move to beautiful music by Aaron Marcus on piano, Chris Rua on oboe and recorder, and Will Patton on mandolin. Martha Kent and Barrett Grimm will teach and walk-through each dance, then will prompt as you dance to the music. All instruction is non-gendered.
Best suited for teens and adults with the ability to walk briskly. Attend with or without a partner; we'll change partners throughout the evening. Wear casual, comfortable clothing and shoes with low heels (flip flops don't work!) Newcomers are welcome - come for the lesson at 6:30pm and then dance to live music at 7pm. $10-$15 sliding scale (pay what you can). Bring your own filled water bottle.
What is English country dancing? It's a form of social dance that's similar to contra dancing and square dancing, but with more variety in the movements, patterns, and (live!) music. It has a rich history that stretches back to the times of Queen Elizabeth I and Jane Austen. Have you seen movies or tv/streaming series based on Jane Austen novels like "Pride and Prejudice" or "Emma"? Then you've seen examples of English country dancing!
Here's a short video clip of an English country dance called "Sunlight Through Draperies", danced in Jericho, VT this summer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gzFDRZcpPAovtZ5_OdkSOkyJZZtZekGs/view?usp=sharing
