Night Fires, which has been described as a "mystery play for our times" is doing its best to bring some hope, beauty and joy to Town Hall Theater in December.
Our solstice story this year takes place up north in the tundra lands of the Sami but, as always, the songs and music performed by an ardent, seasoned group of singers and musicians will roam all across the globe: Spain, Senegal, Scotland, Russia, Syria/Lebanon, China, North America, Mexico, Finland and Norway, with traditional music of the Uyghur, the Ainu and the Sami woven together with Christian chants wed to African and Arabic roots, as well as more recent music by Paul Simon, Dougie Maclean, John Denver and others. A tale of the great wonders of both darkness and light unfolds with music and dance cradled in the humor, magical thinking and heart-felt, bone deep words of grand writers like James Baldwin, Mary Oliver, Denise Levertov and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
