The Alburgh Historical Society and Alburgh Public Library are excited to present a special showing of the history film, "Land of a Thousand Sorrows Revisited," with Canadian film maker and historian, Deke Richards.
The subject of the video is an almost forgotten piece of world history with very local ties – the 1830s "Patriots' War" in Canada, and the subsequent transportation of political prisoners to Van Damien's Land (Tasmania) and Australia. Among these transports to the other side of the globe were a number of Americans, including Alburgh resident Benjamin Mott.
Richards created the film to highlight the often-overlooked but significant part that US Patriots played in the Upper and Lower Canadian Rebellions, as well as their contributions to the building of present-day Tasmania.
Richards was educated at Concordia (Montreal) and the University of Sydney (Australia). His history writing has been published in Canada and Australia. "Land of a Thousand Sorrows Revisited," has been previously shown in Los Angeles. This will be the first showing on the East Coast of the US.
The film is one hour long, largely in English. Some portions will be in French with English subtitles. The film will be followed by a question and answer period with Richards, and refreshments. The program is free.
