Let's be together at this time in the ways we can. Bring a poem that speaks to the complexity of your feelings at this time in the world, and find solidarity with your community.
This informal gathering will also celebrate the newly appointed 2024 Vermont Youth Poet Laureate: Harmony Belle Devoe. Our Creative Director and the current Vermont Poet Laureate, Bianca Stone, will host and introduce the new youth poet laureate.
As all of you who have joined us before know, our broadside gatherings feature a day of conversation and mingling and sharing poems. We will be printing posters ("broadsides") of a featured poet's poem on the old Vandercook SP15 Letterpress press, in our Annette & Dale Schuh Letterpress Studio. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about printmaking and typesetting, and try they hand at printing a broadside themselves. Everyone can take a broadside home for free.
We encourage all youth poets to join us for a open-mic format poetry salon at 3pm, before Harmony gives her reading.
We will have cider, seltzer, various drinks and snacks for guests, and everyone is welcome to bring something to share too.
Pups and children are always welcome.
The Ruth Stone House is a 501c3 Nonprofit organization and we are currently in the midst of a capital campaign. Donations at our events or online are encouraged.
A bit about the National Youth Poet Laureate, and Vermont's Harmony Belle Devoe:
Harmony Belle Devoe places a high value on the transformative power of words to educate, inspire, and create social impact. Her multiracial heritage of Filipino, Indigenous Nipmuc, and white, motivates her to address the injustices in our world, especially those brought upon marginalized communities and the Earth. Having lived in five states and among a wide spectrum of communities, she holds a deep belief in the importance of open-mindedness and the need to advocate for others to embrace diversity and understanding. She finds it her responsibility to write in the pursuit of a more just and equitable world. Harmony is a 9th grader at Harwood Union High School, and aspires to publish her first book in the near future. When not writing, she enjoys trail running and eating lots of baked goods.
The Vermont Youth Poet Laureate program – a statewide partner of the National Youth Poet Laureate program – celebrates our state's top youth poets who are committed to artistic excellence, civic engagement, and social impact. Youth Laureates from across the country participate in dozens of national convenings, performances, and workshops each year with some of America's leading poets including the Poet Laureate of the United States, Ada Limón.
The national program has partners in more than 70 cities, states, and counties, and has been featured in every major news outlet in the country including CNN, PBS, NPR, BBC, NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, and The Guardian. Youth Poets Laureate have graced the stages of City Halls, the Library of Congress, and the White House.
The Vermont Youth Poet Laureate program is produced by Sundog Poetry in partnership with Urban Word and in collaboration with Clemmons Family Farm, Inc., Ruth Stone House, the Flynn Center and Young Writers Project. Funded in part by Vermont Humanities and Vermont Community Foundation.
