On Saturday, November 9th from 10-12 pm, WSWMD is hosting a free backyard composting workshop. It's a chance to learn something new, visit the demonstration site and understand that there are many right ways to compost, and to get general information about transfer station operations. Another lucky bonus: WSWMD is in the process of upgrading our compost manufacturing facility, so participants are welcome to take a walk over to the site after the workshop is completed. Kitchen Caddies for food scraps in the home will be available for sale, certified compostable liners will be available for free, and the sky is the limit for your waste/recycling/compost questions- no bad questions exist!
This workshop will cover: considerations for siting compost systems, how to get a pile started from scratch, how to revive neglected compost, different styles of composting (Alex practices what she calls "lazy girl compost"), overcoming challenges with wildlife, and different ways you might use your finished compost.
The WSWMD Compost Demonstration area (https://windhamsolidwaste.org/resources/composting/compost-demonstration-site/) hosts an array of compost systems and this workshop will cover working with each of them. Whether you prefer piling food scraps and carbon material in a pallet system, keeping the composting materials away from the ground and closed up tight away from critters, or just want a better way to deal with food waste that sends nutrients back into the Earth - your preferences should be covered.
Parking is available in front of the main office (big red building to your right as you enter the transfer station). Wear weather appropriate clothing (it's going to be chilly), bring a notebook if you wish, and bring an open mind. This event is free and open to the public. Join for some or join for all.
Alex Lacy, Outreach Coordinator at WSWMD, will be leading this workshop. She has experience managing a small, year-round university backyard compost system, has taken the UVM master composter course, the Vermont Compost Operator Training course in addition to working as a food scrap hauler in Keene, NH. Alex now works with WSWMD to increase transparency in the world of waste management.
We're looking forward to seeing you at this free workshop!
