Join local geologist Helen Mango as she takes folks on a geology walk at Smokey House Center. Smokey House sits in a valley, surrounded by hills and mountains of complex and interesting geology. The valley itself is underlain by shale, but since this is a relatively soft rock there are few places where it is visible. To the south and west are the Taconic Mountains, which are made up of metamorphic rocks like slate and schist. On this geology tour we will look at rocks that are tucked between the rocks of the valley and the mountains…rocks that tell a story of sedimentary deposition in an ancient ocean, and the tectonic forces that altered and transported the resulting rocks to their present location.
Wear waterproof boots, be prepared for a hike.
