WSWMD will be hosting 2 free home composting workshops this November with outreach coordinator, Alex Lacy. The workshops will be held in WSWMD's compost demonstration area next to where food scraps and recycling get dropped off. Join us to see how a successful compost pile gets started and maintained, discuss different styles of composting, and troubleshoot composting challenges. And, yes, we will talk about bears.
November 2nd from 1-3 pm will be focused on starting a compost pile. Fall is the perfect time to start up a composting system in your backyard what with all the free leaves around! This afternoon workshop occurs outside of business operating hours and so will be free from the distractions of daily operations at the transfer station.
November 9th from 10-12 pm will cover topics from the first workshop and will focus more on maintaining your compost system. This workshop is going to be held during open hours so there may be more commotion surrounding the demonstration area. If you prefer a quieter setting, try and make it to the November 2nd workshop.
If either of the above dates are too rainy and miserable for an outdoor workshop, the rain date will be November 16th from 10-12 pm in the same location. This Saturday is looking good!
The WSWMD Compost Demonstration area (https://windhamsolidwaste.org/resources/composting/compost-demonstration-site/) hosts an array of compost systems and these workshops will cover working with each of them. Whether you prefer piling food scraps and carbon material in a pallet system, keeping the composting materials away from the ground and closed up tight away from critters, or just want a better way to deal with food waste that sends nutrients back into the Earth - your preferences should be covered. Parking is available in front of the main office (big red building to your right as you enter the transfer station). Wear weather appropriate clothing, bring a notebook if you wish, and bring an open mind. This event is free and open to the public - no composting experience required. Join for some or join for all.
Alex Lacy, Outreach Coordinator at WSWMD, will be leading this workshop. She has experience managing a small, year-round university backyard compost system, has taken the UVM master composter course and the Vermont Compost Operator Training Certificate course in addition to working as a food scrap hauler in Keene, NH. Alex now works with WSWMD to increase transparency in the world of waste management.
