Gamelan Sulukala invites you to join us for a concert of traditional and newly composed music for Javanese gamelan. The program includes three premieres of compositions by members of the group, showcasing the creative spirit of the ensemble.
Gamelan is a traditional Indonesian ensemble comprising primarily metallophones, large and small gongs, and drums. The layered textures and cyclical rhythms of gamelan music creates a rich and immersive sound experience. If you've never heard a gamelan performance, you are in for an exquisite treat. If you have, you know it is not to be missed!
Founded in the late 1960s by Dennis Murphy as the Plainfield Village Gamelan and nurtured through the 2000s by Steven and Kathy Light, Gamelan Sulukala recently relocated from Goddard College to the Bethany Church in Montpelier. With 13 members who range in age from their 20s to 70s, we are excited to become a part of the vibrant downtown Montpelier community.
