We might think of Underhill Flats as a quiet bedroom community today, but in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was a bustling town that supplied all the local residents' needs. At various times there were three general stores, three blacksmith shops, wheelwright and harness shops, two auto sellers, a railroad station, a newspaper, four barber shops, ten (!) millinery shops, jewelry stores, tailor shops, a clothing store, hardware stores, a grist mill, butcher shops, bakeries, a furniture store, a tannery and shoemaker, and sewing machine sellers and servicers. There were several hotels, a lunchroom, and a movie theater, as well as undertakers, several doctors and a drug store.
The Underhill Historical Society is pleased to present a talk with many historic photos by historian Gary Irish on the History of Underhill Flats from 1800-1950.
