"Vermont and the Battle of Cedar Creek"

Description: On October 19th, 1864, a surprise attack by Confederate troops in the Shenandoah Valley at Cedar Creek appeared to be a solid victory for the South. Thanks to the heroic efforts of the Vermont's 8th Regiment, the Union reclaimed the battlefield. Mike Soules will describe the role of the Vermonter in the battle, the consequences of the battle, and the significance of the Cedar Creek Room in our state capitol.

In the our state capitol: The First Vermont Brigade at the Battle of Cedar Creek"—a 10-foot by 20-foot painting that has hung in the Vermont State House since 1874.

And a Mural by Charles Andrus at the Vermont National Guard Library & Museum in Colchester

NOTE from Mike Soules:
"My story is an interesting one. I am a retired Vermont teacher, not a history teacher.

We moved to North Carolina in 2015, where I joined the North Carolina Civil War Round Table group. We met monthly and heard from many experts. I was enthralled with this information, so I started to read as much as I could and viewed many Civil War YouTube programs.

We moved to the Shenandoah Valley a few years later. What an amazing place to live, with so many battle sites so nearby! I visited almost all of the major battlefields, some with author Scott Patchan. I also attended the National Civil War Convention in Virginia. One of my friends has a replica of the Gettysburg battle in his basement!

I was fortunate enough to volunteer at Belle Grove and Cedar Creek Battlefield National Park where I was a docent for two years, which fascinated me because of the Vermont connection. Needless to say, I've seen Howard Coffin's "Across the Fence" show and read "Full Duty" too many times to be counted. "
