Teaching All Students to Read

Past event
Oct 24, 2024, 6:30 to 8 PM

This two-part education series hosted by the Waterbury Public Library is a must-attend if you are interested in understanding Vermont's new literacy law, Act 139. Educators Nicole Chick, Dr. Dorinne Dorfman and Kathryn Grace have multiple years in teaching literacy in various specialties. The Waterbury Library is honored to have these renowned educators share from the depths of their experience.

Every student can be taught to read and science has proven this over the past four decades.

Tuesday evening, October 22nd, Nicole Chick kicks off the series with an understanding of brain function and applies that to teaching methods that target literacy gaps. Dorinne Dorfman follows with an explanation of Vermont's new literacy law and how parents and teachers can best prepare for changes in school protocols. What are best practices?

On Thursday, October 24th, Kathryn Grace takes the stage with an interactive workshop to help participants better understand how the sounds (phonemes) of language can be represented by one or more letters (graphemes) which is essential in learning to read, spell, and store information in your brain.

Come to one, come to both. All are welcome- parents, teachers, educators, anyone interested in literacy.

Both classes take place in the Library's SAL Room from 6:30-8 PM.
