The Civic Standard is hosting its first annual Jack-o-lantern contest, and all are invited to show off their carving work, or just come to spectate and eat snacks. Our panel of celebrity judges will be there to choose winners in multiple categories, including "Best Kids Carving", "Funniest", "Scariest" and "Most Similar to the Town Manager". Electric candles only please.
And at the same time, in the park next door, the Community Ofrenda will open.
Many people make altars or "ofrendas" (offerings) in their homes to honor their loved ones who have passed on as a part of Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The ofrenda represents a remembrance of the departed and a celebration of their lives.
If you would like to honor the memory of someone you've lost please bring a copy of a photo, small items of remembrance, or write a note to leave in our communal alter. The alter will be set up until November 6.
