Astronomy Notes – Jewels of the Sky

Oct 21, 2024, 7:30 to 9:30 PM

The Lamoille County Star Gazers are pleased to finally (we hope) announce a public observing night at the Grout Observatory at Peoples Academy in Morrisville.

We'll look at three types of objects. First, planets, specifically Saturn and its rings – one of the most impressive sights in the sky. Second, double stars, specifically Albireo, with one gold star and one bright blue star, one of the prettiest sights in the sky. And finally, globular clusters, thousands of stars in "balls" trillions of miles in diameter, specifically Messier 13.

Weather permitting, the session will take place on Monday, October 21. (If you can see the stars, we're on. You can also check Front Porch Forum or our Facebook page, or email lcvtsg@gmail.com until 4 PM on October 21.) We'll start observing at 7:30 PM and continue until about 9:30. We'll identify a backup day as we get closer to October 21.

Notes:

• The observatory is on the small knoll on the right as you drive up Copley Avenue and enter the circle in front of the main Peoples Academy building.
• Park in the student parking lot by the bandshell.
• Watch your step on the path leading up to the observatory.
• Bring a flashlight but try not to turn it on. The more dark-adapted your eyes are, the better.
• Dress appropriately. It will be chilly out there.
