Burlington Racial Equity Inclusion and Belonging Office Vision and Mission Redesign
The City of Burlington has decided to "redesign" the Vision and Mission of the City of Burlington's REIB office. They have suggested that it is essential for "aligning our equity work with current and future needs".
This redesign initiative comes in the wake of the deeply troubling harm done (with no resolution in sight) to the first Director and abrupt departure of the second Director, both Black women. The initial strategic plan, mission, vision, structure and much of the work previously conducted by the REIB seems to have been all but erased. The office budget, previously moved from general fund to ARPA funding in FY 2023 is now funded through the general fund at less than one third its previous size. There have never been nor does there exist any plans to incorporate the department into the City Charter as all other departments (except one) are. No plans exist to create an associated Commission as many of the other departments have (and the enabling resolution suggested).
Come meet the department and provide your input.
