Winter Birding Excitement

Oct 17, 2024, 1:30 to 2:30 PM

Maeve Kim, a local birder and speaker, has done programs for the Community Senior Center a number of times in the past. Her programs are excellent, and she always has wonderful photos to illustrate her talks. We're excited to have her return.

During this virtual program, Maeve will talk about how during the coldest days of the year, large flocks of little birds of many different species can be found in the state. The number of species, the variety, is less than during the spring and summer breeding season – but for raw numbers, a day spent birding in December, January or February can yield an astonishing number of birds, often seen in large flocks. In this presentation, we'll visit with little birds that might show up in Vermont's agricultural fields (Horned Larks, Snow Buntings, Lapland Longspurs), in our yards, woods and parks (Bohemian Waxwings, Pine Grosbeaks, Red Crossbills, White- winged Crossbills) and at our feeders (Purple Finches, Evening Grosbeaks, Pine Siskins, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Common and Hoary Redpolls). We'll also talk about Ron Pittaway's Finch Forecast for this coming winter and about irruptive migration as opposed to other kinds of migration.

Sponsored by the Community Senior Center. Free and open to all.
