St. John's Episcopal Church in East Poultney celebrates its heritage.
On October 20th at 2:00 p.m., a special service of Evensong will be held at historic St. John's Episcopal Church in East Poultney. The Reverend Melanie Combs (Vicar of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Fair Haven) will officiate. John Riddle (music director at Trinity Episcopal, Rutland) will be the organist.
The church opened as the area parish in 1835 and remains physically unchanged. The first congregation filled the gated pews that year and traditional Episcopal services were held in St. John's until 1935. Since that time, services have been held intermittently, along with special events. The building has great charm and good acoustics but no electricity. One outstanding feature is the bellows-operated, hand-pumped organ, with a fine, rich sound. There will be a festive gathering outside the church after the service. The attached cemetery will also be open to visitors. Guests may park on the lawn in fair weather. (No rain date has been scheduled.)
