Exciting New Exhibits and Programs at Dummerston Historical Society
The Society's Open House this Sunday, October 6, from 1-3 pm will introduce several new exhibits, starting with a display of motorcycle photos taken by Bob George, just in time for the upcoming Dummerston Apple Pie Festival on the following Sunday, October 13 at which time motorcyclists from all over New England appear for their last fall getaway. Many of the photos are of Stan Lynde and his cohorts at his Lynde Motorsports Shop on Flat Sheet. Memories of times past.
Other new exhibits include farm tools and implements from the past, including an old horse harness, several scythe, a chicken catcher, a chain of bells, and many more, all borrowed from multiple farms in the area. Come see what they discovered in the recesses of their barns and haylofts. This exhibit will set the tone for the program planned for the Sunday, October 20th, 2-4 pm Dummerston Historical Society quarterly meeting by Bill Schmidt who will speak about his homestead, Elysian Hills, its long history as the Knapp Farm, its prominence for a number of years as a Morgan horse stable know regionally for its work, and in greater detail, about Elysian Hills itself, a farm that produced many crops, including Gilfeather turnip see, Knapp organic rhubarb, asparagus and Christmas trees, under the imaginative management of Bill and Mary Lou. Elysian Hills is now in the caring ownership of Jack & Karen Mannix of Walker Farm.
Prior to the Sunday, October 20 Annual meeting, on Saturday, October 19th at 2 pm, you are invited to a special walk to Elysian Hill's Stone Trees and Circular Stone Cemetery. This walk is special because Jared Flynn, the creator and builder of the Stone Trees and nearby Circular Stone Cemetery will be present to talk about his idea for the Stones Trees and how they were constructed. The second feature of the walk will be Circular Stone Cemetery which Jared also built. The physical body of Mary Lou Schmidt and the five dogs she and husband Bill had over five decades are buried there. Bill will share one of his amazing dog stores.
The Artist Corner will include a new exhibit by Dummerston resident, Connie Evans, who will be displaying her works through December 15. Connie, a retired teacher and lawyer, has dabbled in a range of arts but her primary focus has been watercolor painting. Connie will be available for an artist's talk November 3 at 1:30 pm
