Huntington River Rock Ramble

Past event
Oct 6, 2024, 1 to 4 PM

You are invited to join the first (and perhaps only) Huntington River Rock Ramble, this Sunday, October 6, from 1 to 4 PM, adjacent to the Huntington Community Gardens in the Lower Village. Due to the recent floods, the farm fields surrounding the Huntington Community Gardens have acquired a new beach! Come stroll along the sandy beach and cobble stones left by the river after the removal of over an acre of top soil. If you like history and geology this is an outing you and your kids will enjoy. Explore the various layers of sand and the wide range of colors and textures of rocks deposited on the surface.

There will be a contest to see who can find the most interesting and amazing rock. Simply enter the contest by bringing the most spectacular rock you find during your ramble to the judges' table. The challenge will be to choose just one of the endless supply of rocks tumbled and left behind by the raging waters. No age limit to enter. Winners of the "most interesting and amazing rock" will be judged by all those in attendance. The entry with the most votes will receive the grand prize of $100. The entry with the second most votes will receive $50, and the third place will receive $10.

Bring a picnic or snacks (no glass bottles please) and enjoy a little time strolling along the new beach and cobble stones and explore the colors and shapes and textures of wind, water, and earth. Since the river will be nearby (and hopefully low) all children must be accompanied by an adult. Parking available at the Community Gardens and nearby. Who knows- maybe after your ramble you will leave with $100 for your afternoon outing.
