Driving Tour of Orwell's Military Roads of the American Revolution: construction, use and legacy. Saturday, October 5, 8:30-11:00 a.m., hosted by the Orwell Historical Society and guided by Jim Rowe and Walter Phelps. Convene at the OHS parking lot (473 Main St., Orwell) at 8:30 for orientation, rain or shine. Car caravan departs at 9. This event is free and all are welcome!
During the Revolution, the town of Orwell was crisscrossed by rough, rutted roads, that were hacked out of the forest in order to bring troops and supplies to the forts at Ticonderoga and Mt. Independence and to provide strategic routes for military maneuvers. Jim Rowe, an OHS board member and Historian of the Crown Point Road Association, will lead a guided tour following the DAR markers which preserve this history.
