VOLUNTEERS NEEDED (posting from Paul Bugeja, Native Fish Coalition)

On Saturday, September 28th Native Fish Coalition of Vermont with cooperation from Cambridge Conservation Commission will be starting a Knotweed removal project on Brewster River in Jeffersonville, Vermont.

Why are we doing this project?
Knotweed is an invasive and aggressively growing plant that crowds out beneficial trees and shrubs that provide shade as well stream stability to prevent erosion, shade, cleaner and cooler stream conditions.

There is a relatively easy hiking path along the Brewster River, which is a really nice place to see this gorgeous stream, get out in nature and get a little exercise to boot. Believe me you will enjoy this nice hike!

There are two sections\patches that we will working on in multiple outings starting this fall and going into next year.

For this first round we will probably work a half day of cutting and dragging off Knotweed stalks to a designated composting area.

I will arriving at the Brewster River Park parking lot before 8:00AM on Saturday. If you want to arrive later, please use the following instructions and attached map links to the site we will working at.

Things to Bring:

• Tree limb cutters or another device to cut down the knotweed
• Gloves
• Beverage
• Snack

I will bring two devices for cutting knotweed, tarp, and some rope to assist in dragging the bundles off the river.

From Jeffersonville, head south on Rt. 108, make a left hand turn on Grist Mill Dr, you will see the entrance to the Brewster River Park on right, you can park there. You will see the Grist Mill Covered Bridge on your left as you drive into the park and if there are no available parking spots you can cross drive over the bridge and park along the road.

From the park, cross the covered bridge, and on the right, you will see stone steps that is begins the Alden Bryan Trail along the Brewster River. The hike to the knotweed patch from the parking log is approximately one mile.
