What is Plain Language and why do we need it? Simply put, it is a way to speak and write clearly for the needs of your audience. It is accessible, ethical, trustworthy and practical. It is effective in business, in education, in life. It is for teachers, students, and parents; it is for business people and leaders; it is for readers and writers; and it is for folks with disabilities. In short, it is for everyone. With Plain Language, people need fewer explanations as communication is direct, in the active voice, with common everyday language. It is concise and clear. It is for your audience, not yourself. If people understand what is being communicated, fewer mistakes are made. It is a win-win for everyone.
Saturday, September 28th from 10 O'Clock to Noon in the Waterbury Public Library's SAL Room, Walter Duda will be giving a workshop on Plain Language. In this workshop you will learn what Plain Language is and what it is not; how Plain Language helps an audience get what they want and need; see examples of complex language and how Plain Language can help simplify it; and finally, get Plain Language concepts you can apply after the session.
Walter Duda spent his career with the State of Vermont and it was there he honed his skills as a trainer and technical writer. These guidelines that Duda will teach come from his years of study and implementation.
