'Replaying the Tape' is a collaboration between women practitioners: award-winning poet Penny Boxall, New-York based composer Dr Jane Boxall, and palaeontologist Dr Frankie Dunn (University of Oxford). Our new piece, incorporating poetry, live percussion and tape track, considers the role of chance in evolution, and conjures an imaginary menagerie of animals which might have existed had the dice-throw of evolution fallen differently.

'Replaying the Tape' premiered in New York in November 2023, supported by MATA Presents and the Drusilla Harvey Access Fund (Society of Authors). Summer 2024 sees a Europe-based tour: we will perform in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History and Wytham Woods in late June, and on 5-7 July 2024, we will take the performance to Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire, which is an internationally important fossil site. Jane has composed new music for tape and live percussion, which Penny's poetry both complements and spars with. We perform it with flexible instrumentation, as appropriate to the venue. The tape aspect includes field recordings from Frankie's research trips, tape manipulation of found sounds, and altered samples from the poetry itself.
