Born in Seoul, Korea, Chonghyo Shin holds both Bachelor of Music and Masters of Music degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music. She studied privately with Nadia Reisenberg and Stell Andersen and, as a performer, attended the master classes of Alfred Brendel and Jeanne-Marie Darre. She has performed as a soloist with Boston Pops Orchestra, the New England Conservatory Orchestra, and The Pioneer Valley Symphony, as well as in numerous solo and chamber music recitals throughout her career.
When she was 18, she attended a performance by Arthur Rubenstein in Symphony Hall in Boston and says of that event "Until that day I had no idea that such beauty existed in this world, because I had no idea that the sound of the piano and the music could be so powerful and moving. On that day I decided to become a pianist and a music teacher to help guide others to have such a profound experience."
Chonghyo Shin has been teaching piano for the last 60 years, teaching every level from beginner to the very advanced. Many of her former students are well-known musicians as well as teachers. Teaching piano is her passion. A former teacher at the Preparatory Division of the New England Conservatory and at Keene State College, Chonghyo now teaches at Amherst College as well as at the Brattleboro Music Center.
Mrs. Shin will be playing works by Bach, Schubert, Chopin, Albeniz, Granados and Debussy.
