The extended forecast is looking great for cleaning up our river. This annual event is hosted by the Barre City River Access Task Force with support from our partners at Barre City Public Works, Vermont River Conservancy, and Friends of the Winooski River.
WHAT TO EXPECT: A breakfast of bagels, baked goods, and coffee will be provided. You'll be picking up trash in the form of plastic bags, old tires, bike parts, and other random debris. We'll be doing this for about 2.5 hours, wading through the water in the Stevens Branch and Jail Branch rivers. The water will range from ankle to knee high, but can get above the knees in some places.
WHERE TO MEET: At the overflow parking lot across from Spaulding High School along the Jail Branch at 9 AM for breakfast and an introduction. Then groups will split up and head to clean up sites throughout the city.
WHAT TO BRING: Please come prepared to get dirty and get a workout! Wear appropriate clothing, including shoes that can be worn in the river, bring a snack and water, gloves (to protect your hands), and protection from sun or rain (we don't recommend rubber boots unless they are attached to waders). Note that the river access spots and river beds can be steep, extremely slippery, rocky, and uneven, so bring your river legs!
RSVPs to barrerivers@gmail.com are recommended and help us plan. Youth (14-18) who want to participate in the cleanup without a parent present MUST bring a liability release form signed by their parent to the event. You will be able to find our release forms on our Facebook Page - Barre City River Access Task Force - soon.
People younger than 14 must be accompanied by a parent throughout the event.
