It's campaign season and there is a bit of tension in the air.
I am rereading a book by Colin Woodard, American Nations, a History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America.
It is a fascinating read and helpful in understanding the core differences in our country and the distinctions of the many cultures in which we live. I highly recommend it!
Skip and I first heard Colin Woodard speak live in Maine at the Mid-Coast Forum on Foreign Relations, and were so impressed that we read most of his books. Woodard can be heard on the link below as was broadcast on Maine Public Radio as he talked and answered questions about his book, American Nations.
As Woodard has described the enormous differences in our country, our people, our thinking and beliefs, it becomes convincingly clear that it is not a simple difference of red and blue states.
More eloquently expressed, Colin Woodard's words speak:
"America's most essential and abiding divisions are not between red states and blue states, conservatives and liberals, capital and labor, blacks and whites, the faithful and the secular. Rather our divisions stem for this fact: the United States is a federation comprised of the whole or part of elven regional nations, some of which truly do not see eye to eye with one another. "
Please drop by our local library to pick up a copy and join me in reading this fascinating and powerful work. It promises to be a worthy discussion on September 26th at 1:00 p.m at the Greensboro Library.
