Open House Saturday Sept. 14th at Gov. Jonas Galusha's Home from 11:00- 3:00 to view Shaftsbury's 1888 Signature Quilt.
In 1888, nine members of the Ladies Ministerial committee, met and decided to create the quilt as a fund raiser to cover a $12.58 deficit they had discovered at the Baptist Church in Center Shaftsbury.
Carol's great-grandmother, Nellie Jane (Harrington) Corey won the raffle. She was supposed to finish the quilt but due to life circumstances was never able to do so. In 1973, when Carol married her husband, Stanley, her mother passed the quilt down to her. For over fifty years Carol wanted to learn about these early ordinary heroes. After thirty-two years of teaching she finally had the time to begin this retirement project. Mrs. Dziubek has researched each signer and written biographies with supporting evidence from http://ancestry.com, http://find-a-grave.com, http://newspapers.com, Federal Censuses, and Town Clerks' records.
The quilt has been in her family for 136 years and she has donated it to the Shaftsbury Historical Society, where she believes it truly belongs.
