Death Cafe Curious?
You may have seen our FPF event posting or seen the sign at the Community Center and wondered about this strange thing called Death Cafe. From time to time, someone will express curiosity and ask for more information, so I thought I would elaborate here.
For many people, talking about death is hard. Even if it's something you're open to, it can be awkward to raise the topic. But everyone has experiences, ideas and feelings about death, and sometimes it feels good to be able to have a safe space for conversation and mutual support. At Death Cafe, no one is going to tell you what to do or think, or counsel you, or try to sell you a product or a cause. We simply sit together, talking and listening, and drinking tea and eating cake. (Because Death Cafe started in England, "tea and cake" are the Death Cafe umbrella term for whatever drinks and snacks we might bring.) Our Jericho group has been meeting for over a year. We have 24 people on our email list and generally around 8 people attending. Our conversations have been open, honest, stimulating and often moving. We welcome new participants. Feel free to just show up at the Community Center at our next meeting this Sunday, August 18, from 7:00-8:30 PM or to email me if you have questions.
