Visit the Dwinell Homestead in East Calais

Past event
Aug 19, 2024, 5 to 7 PM

On Monday, August 19 the Dwinell Homestead at 4610 Route 14 will be open for a tour hosted by Cyrus Parker (grandson of Harold Dwinell) and sponsored by the Calais and East Montpelier Historical Societies. Bring a picnic supper at 5:00 to be eaten in the kitchen. The tour will follow. There is limited parking at the house, and that is saved for those who cannot walk from the parking lot at the post office/recreation building.

In 1936, upon the death of Clarence Dwinell, the Dwinell Homestead (circa 1836), Moscow Mills, and surrounding property were saved from a depression-era auction when Harold Dwinell (Cyrus' grandfather) and his five siblings (Franklin, Ralph, Irene, Ester and Rachel), who grew up in the village, pooled their funds for a mortgage in an effort to remain part of the Calais community. They had a vague plan to use the house whenever possible for family gatherings, vacations, reunions, and weddings.

With the support of now 30 Dwinell descendants, the Dwinell Homestead Association has managed to keep their plan in place for 89 years, centering around a string of 60 annual July 4th reunions.

The tour will include the house (not much changed since 1936!), barns and attached ell which was the Calais Town Clerk's office for 30+ years.

Parking is at the post office/recreation building. Someone will drive you to the house if you are uncomfortable walking and/or crossing Route 14.
