Styrofoam, that brittle plastic foam (aka Expanded Polystyrene #6), does NOT decompose in nature.
Unfortunately, if you toss it into the trash, eventually, it will:
-- break down into micro-plastics that will contaminate our food, drinking water, bodies, and surroundings;
-- take up lots of space in Vermont's few landfills;
-- release methane, one of the most potent kinds of greenhouse gas.
Rather than trash it, drop it off at this month's (free) Styrofoam ♻️ Recycling Collection.
Date: Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9 - 11 a.m. (rain date: Sept. 7, 9 - 11am)
Place: Mascoma Bank parking lot, 243 Sykes Mountain Ave, White River Junction, VT.
TIP: If you can bend it, that means it is NOT Styrofoam.
What we CAN & CANNOT recycle:
--Styrofoam (#6) -- (do NOT break it into smaller fragments)
--Clean #6 food, drink, and egg containers
--NO packing peanuts (try a UPS store -- they might be glad to reuse them)
--NO foam insulation boards
