Justices of the Peace do more than officiate weddings. They are members of the Board of Civil Authority, which oversees elections in our town and acts as a quasi-judicial board to hear appeals of property tax assessments, and they also serve on the Board of Abatement. Lincoln elects seven Justices of the Peace (JPs) in each even numbered year.
Right now is the time for getting your name on the ballot, and I haven't heard of anyone running or party meetings yet. Party Chairs should be giving notice of local caucus meetings ASAP. The deadline for submitting candidate nominations to me is Monday, August 19 (extended due to the Bennington Battle Day Holiday on Friday.) Independent candidates must file a petition and consent form (also by August 19). Here is a link to the VT Secretary of State's website where you can obtain a blank independent petition and consent form: https://outside.vermont.gov/dept/sos/Elections%20Division/election%20info%20and%20resources/[...]pdf Voting for JPs will occur on November 5, 2024, but their new terms won't begin until Feb. 1, 2025.
Please, if you are interested in running for this position, ACT NOW. I can't run elections without your help.
Reach out to me if you have questions about the position, or you can read more about it here: https://outside.vermont.gov/dept/sos/Elections%20Division/town%20clerks%20and%20local%20elec[...]pdf
