Barry Whitney will be doing a presentation for the Salisbury historical society about Colonel Thomas Sawyer of Massachusetts, Clarendon VT and finally of Salisbury. After enlisting as a private in the Revolutionary war in Massachusetts he was stationed at Ticonderoga and on Lake Champlain. While passing and repassing thru the area he noted the water privileges in what is now Salisbury Village. The Colonel was a mill wright and built Mills where ever he lived. Mr Sawyer became a officer and commander of the forts in Rutland county. He also built the first mills and Tavern in Salisbury. This tavern building was where the town of Leicester was chartered, where Salisbury held it's town meetings, where the glass factory was formed and was the center of the mill industry and town itself.
Come join the talk that will include the mills, store, tavern, Indian raids, the burning of Neshobe...(Brandon). We will also cover the revolutionary war with the battle of Shelburne VT that took the life of Salisbury native Samuel Daniels. Although the Tavern partially burned in 1906, the preset Whitney Store in the village was raised on its foundation and is now under the ownership of Barry and Daniel Whitney.
