WHEELOCK DEMOCRATS!!!
You are invited to attend the 2024 Wheelock Town Democratic Caucus to nominate and submit a slate of up to 5 JP candidates, to appear on the November 2024 ballot. (The number of JPs is allotted under state law by Town population - under 1,000 residents = 5 JP nomination slots.)
WHEN? Tuesday, August 6th, 2024
WHAT TIME? 6:00 p.m.
WHERE? Wheelock Town Hall parking lot
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
- Anyone 18 years of age or older;
- Only residents of Wheelock;
- You must agree to be running as a Democrat.
Vermont state law [17 VSA 2384] says that each candidate must be elected by a majority of those present.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
In Vermont, a Justice of the Peace (or JP) is the lowest level elected official identified by party. JPs perform several important functions in their municipalities:
- JPs act as local elections officials to support free and fair elections;
- JPs hear tax abatements and assessments to provide a transparent and responsive process;
- JPs administer oaths;
- JPs officiate/perform marriages;
- JPs, along with other town officials, make up the Board of Civil Authority whose role it is to purge the town's voter list of people who are no longer eligible voters due to death or a change of residency.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The November 2024 General Election is shaping up to be a momentous and historic event. Democrats need to be energized, well-informed, and registered to vote for democratic candidates up and down the 2024 ticket. We are hoping that in doing their part, Wheelock democrats will nominate a full slate of 5 JP candidates. JPs are people who believe in the rule of law and the free and fair conduct of elections in these positions. JPs also serve as a great "starter" position for anyone interested in serving their community, providing invaluable experience and insight into the basic functioning of government in Vermont.
