Henry David Thoreau's Prose and Poetry in Performance

Past event
Aug 18, 2024, 3 to 4 PM

Jim Stapleton and Diana Bigelow will present a one-hour performance piece with commentary featuring the poetry of Henry David Thoreau, the 19th Century New England author. Thoreau became famous as an essayist, naturalist, political activist, and transcendentalist, but how much do we know about him as a poet? What's interesting about Thoreau's poetry is the marked difference between his published poems and those uncovered by Thoreau scholar, Prof. William White. White altered prose sentences from Thoreau's Journal by breaking them into shorter, more poetic line segments, raising the question: What's the difference between prose and poetry?

The program will be held at the Ripton Community Church, Sunday, August 18th at 3:00 pm. Readings and commentary will run about an hour, followed by a Q & A session. Free admission.
