Are the ancient stone structures and chambers in Vermont evidence that Europeans, Africans, and Asians visited America at least 3,000 years prior to Columbus? The Royalton Historical Society has invited Howard Coffin to speak on his reporting of Harvard University professor Barry Fell's research indicating that the stone chambers in our area are prehistoric sites. Coffin will speak on Saturday, August 3rd at 2:00 pm at the Chase Center at Vermont Law and Graduate School as part of Royalton's Old Home Days celebration.
It was the conclusion of Barry Fell's research that the stone structures are prehistoric. Mr. Fell wrote three popular books on the subject in the late 1970's and 80's. Howard Coffin, Vermont historian, author and former Rutland Herald reporter, wrote the first stories on Fell's Vermont research and traveled with him to the sites and will present his reporting on the interesting subject.
The stone chambers in our area generate great interest with some people favoring Barry Fell research and believe the structures to be prehistoric. Others just as strongly believe the structures are sacred sites for the Indigenous People who lived in the area prior to European settlement. And others believe the stone chambers to be colonial root cellars. People are invited to make their own conclusion and come and listen to Howard Coffin and what he reported after meeting with Barry Fell. A small admission fee will be charged for those who attend.
