Cyanobacteria (Blue Green Algae) Symposium

Past event
Jul 24, 2024, 6:30 to 8 PM

Cyanobacteria, also known as "blue green algae," is a major public concern, especially with increasing warmer temperatures and nutrient loading into Vermont lakes and ponds. Being informed about cyanobacteria blooms and the potential environmental and health impacts is critical as we venture into our lakes and ponds this summer.

Join the Memphremagog Watershed Association Cyanobacteria Symposium to learn more about both the historical and current issues that cause the cyanobacteria blooms. This symposium is an opportunity to learn from a diverse group of experts in the field of cyanobacteria. Topics will include what cyanobacteria is, how have our historical and current land use trends led to the current issues with cyanobacteria, and what are the drivers of nutrient loading that has led to more frequent algae blooms? Impacts of climatic change and extreme weather events, as well as health effects will be discussed. We will wrap up with a look at methods for stormwater management and mitigation of nutrient loading.

The Cyanobacteria Symposium is hosted by the Memphremagog Watershed Association, and will take place at the Gateway Center, 84 Fyfe Drive, Newport Vermont. Doors will open at 5:00. Presentation will begin at 6:30. Come early and enjoy complimentary refreshments. Virtual attendance will also be available. A link will be posted on the MWA website (www.memphremagogwatershedassociation.com/category/events/).
