The history of the health of Vermonters in the 19th century has received little attention in the past. This presentation will discuss two of the most difficult challenges they faced during this time, substance abuse and abortion, demonstrating that "the more things change, the more they stay the same."
Gary Shattuck served for over three decades in law enforcement in Colorado and Vermont., including as a federal prosecutor working with governments in Kosovo and Iraq. Since retiring, he has written numerous books and articles on obscure aspects of Vermont history from a legal perspective., among them Green Mountain Opium Eaters: A History of Early Addiction in Vermont (2017) and By the Wand of Some Magician: Embracing Modernity in Mid-Nineteenth Century Vermont (2020).
