Calais Poor Farm Presentation July 15

This month's Calais and East Montpelier Historical Societies' meeting will be a discussion of the public assistance system in Vermont prior to 1968, including the role of Town Farms and, specifically, the history of the Medad Wright farm, which served as the Calais Town Farm.

Located in Kents Corner, next to the Old West Church at 842 Old West Church Road, the Medad Wright farm was the Calais Town Farm or "poor farm" from 1871 until 1943.

Please join us for a "brown bag" picnic in front of the Old West Church beginning at 5:00pm, Monday, July 15. Bring your "brown bag" and a chair! An informal discussion will follow inside the church at 5:30, to include the history of the Medad Wright farm as well as excerpts from the diary of Forest Davis. Forest and Betty Davis purchased the home in 1953 and raised their family there. Forest's diary entries offer a personal description of the condition of the house at the time, the process of purchasing it and its history. At 6:00 tours of the Medad Wright house (now a private residence) will be offered.

Please feel free to join all or part of the evening. This event is free and open to the public.
